1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – 1974 Five friends visiting their grandpa’s old house are hunted down and terrorized by a chainsaw wielding killer and his family of grave-robbing cannibals. I feel that this is the best horror movie ever made. The absolute terror and mayhem that ensues in this movie is purely horrifying. The main actress Marilyn Burns does an absolutely fantastic job portraying her frightful experiences with her role. |

4. The Shining - 1980 A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific scenes from the past and of the future. Jack Nicholson’s acting as a complete nut leaves the audience nothing but scared out of their mind. The demeanor of his character is nothing short of a master piece and the movie is an up and down rollercoaster ride of terror. |

5. Zombie - 1980 Strangers looking for a woman’s father arrive at a tropical island where a doctor desperately searches for the cause and cure of a recent epidemic of the undead. Zombie is still to this day one of the best corpse eating movies to date. The impressive realism and special effects used in this film really captivated and frightened the masses. The sheer methodical manner that the zombies exhibited in this movie makes for a scary ride. |
Just to make a notable mention of other classic horror movies that were fantastic but just missed the list was the original Halloween, Dawn Of The Dead, Carrie, Re-Animator and Day Of The Dead.
To be fair, the most recent horror movies released within the last dozen years that have been terrifying and would possibly be included in a Top 25 list would be Darkness Falls, I Know What You Did Last Summer, High Tension, Ginger Snaps and Dead End.
